Engineering Students at SmartCity Malta Site

SmartCity Malta recently hosted a group of Year IV Structural Engineering Stream students from the Faculty for the Built Environment. This educational site-visit was held in collaboration with the SmartCity Malta’s precast contractor, General Precast Concrete.

During the visit the students were accompanied on-site by Mr Filippo Ciadamidaro, of Bovis Lend Lease S.r.l., SmartCity Malta’s Senior Project Manager, together with lecturer Mr. Ruben Paul Borg B.E.&A.(Hons.), Spec.Struct.Eng.(Milan), Eur.Ing., A.&C.E., from the Department of Building and Civil Engineering and the contractor technician, Eng. Johann Bondin of General Precast Concrete. The students were given a hands-on explanation of the structure concept as they toured the various constructions utilizing precast elements.

Throughout the site-visit strict health and safety measures were adhered to by all those attending, as they toured the whole area and even scaled the constructions to be able to observe on-site precast techniques. An open discussion was later held at SmartCity Malta’s head office where the visitors were given a general introduction to the SmartCity Malta, including the LEED concept.

The students were given a hands-on explanation of the structure concept as they toured the various constructions utilizing precast elements.

All those involved in the visit confirmed that the afternoon was an instructive and enjoyable one. Following the visit Mr Reuben Paul Borg said, “On behalf of Department of Building & Civil Engineering, I would like to thank all concerned, in particular Mr. Francis Vella, Director of General Precast Concrete, Eng. Johann Bondin of GPC and especially Project Manager Filippo Ciadamidaro of BOVIS, for supporting the initiative of a site visit at SmartCity Malta. I am confident that it was an important experience for the Architecture and Civil Engineering students.”
